Marcel Barel 1931-2019
You just had to say "Marcel" and everyone at Lee Canyon knew who you were talking about. It wasn't just his name over the Ski School window, or that he was the skinny guy with the accent. He was the guy all of us kids wanted to ski like. My earliest memories of skiing at Lee, almost 50 years ago now, have some picture of Marcel slushing down the mountain in a carved turn. My wife, Austrialian but raised on a tropical island and Perth Australia, having never seen snow before, I put her in his hands to learn to ski. Then came my own kids and so many others as well. Eventually Marcel moved on to other mountains. But his spirit still infuses Lee. He has moved on again, but his spirit remains as before, infused in the mountains and people he loved, and who loved him.
